Frank Field MP wins opportunity for Birkenhead to negotiate £25 million ‘Town Deal’

06 Sep 2019
Frank Field MP has received a response from the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government, inviting Birkenhead to negotiate a new investment deal worth up to £25 million.

The letter follows Frank’s request to the Secretary of State for such investment to create more jobs, safeguard the future of local youth services, quickly upgrade street lights with decent bulbs, bring empty or dilapidated buildings back into use, and maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of streets, back entries and green spaces.

Frank will now convene a local steering group with community organisations, residents’ groups, businesses, councillors, and public bodies, to negotiate the deal – labelled a ‘Town Deal’ by the Secretary of State – which has as its aim a sustainable raising of living standards in Birkenhead.

Frank comments: ‘I’ve been working hard to gain the Secretary of State’s support for the ideas we have been developing in Birkenhead for new investment. Today’s invitation to begin negotiating the terms of such an investment programme represents a major step forward.’

In addition, Frank is today launching a new initiative to create the beginnings of a housing and development corporation for Birkenhead. He is meeting with local landlords and potential investors, to scope the possibilities for a new body which has as its aim a major increase in the supply of decent and affordable housing for people on low or modest incomes.

Frank has written to the Minister of State for Housing, asking whether start-up funding could be made available to help such a body acquire an initial tranche of housing, run its own ethical lettings agency, establish housing co-operatives across the town, and create a repairs and maintenance scheme for properties which, at the moment, are either empty or in poor condition.
