A Policy for Pensions: Prosperity and Security in Retirement Thursday 3 February 2005 |

| On Thursday February 3rd Politeia will be holding a major conference on pensions policy to address the vital issues which this (and other) western countries must tackle now and in the future. All agree that the UK’s pensions system is in disarray. Over recent decades the once broadly successful system of prviate, occupational and state pensions has ceased to flourish. Indeed, in the decades to come as demographic patterns change, and there is higher proportion of retired people to those of working age, the pensions problem may well become worse. The conference will address a number of vital questions. What has caused the pensions problem in this (and other) western countries? How important are demographic and employment patterns? What role does the state have in pensions’ policy, and what role should the private sector have? How can saving for the future best be encouraged? What lessons can be learned from other omodels in Europe and globally. What course is needed for prosperity in retirement? On the panel to discuss these and other issues will be: The Rt Hon Frank Field MP, author of Politeia’s How Savings Damage Your Retirement Chris Daykin HM Government Actuary, author of Politeia’s Pension Systems: The EU and Accession Countries Paul Thornton, The Senior Partner, Watson Wyatt LLP author of Politeia’s The Pensions Predicament David Willetts, MP, author of Politeia’s Tax Credits: Do They Add Up? |
