Local MPs to play active role in securing post-Brexit deal for the car and van manufacturing industry

23 May 2018
Commons Chamber Ministers have given local MPs a role in trying to marshal support for a smooth exit from the European Union, in respect of the car and van manufacturing industry.

In a meeting yesterday that Justin Madders MP led, and at which he was accompanied by Frank Field MP, the MPs asked to be involved in meeting trade unions, car manufacturers, and trade associations in this country and Europe, to encourage the respective negotiators on both sides to secure frictionless trade in the automotive sector, recognising that it is in everyone’s interest for there to be no trade barriers.

Commenting on the meeting, Justin said that he would involve other local MPs who had interests in the Ellesmere Port plant and that this was a very important initiative which had been welcomed by the Ministers present at the meeting. The Ministers were Robin Walker MP from the Department for Exiting the European Union and Richard Harrington MP from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Justin said, ‘It is important we give the workforce and the wider industry as much certainty as possible. That means we have to encourage everyone in the sector across Europe to press home the message that there must be no impediments to frictionless trade.’

Frank added, ‘We will be reporting back regularly to our constituents, illustrating that MPs don’t have to be idle watchers, but should be active participants in making Brexit a real success for Vauxhall’s workforce and pensioners.’
