Supporting animal welfare

A sizeable number of Wirral residents write to me each week to share their views on the treatment of animals, and to campaign for advances in animal welfare.

I have been pleased over successive parliaments to support their campaigns by taking them up with ministers and supporting House of Commons Motions pushing for more adequate levels of protection. The treatment meted out to some animals in the name of experimentation or profit is diabolical.

One local resident, Carrina Rowe, has been ever-present in these campaigns. I was therefore pleased to lend my backing to a recent Charity Night, organised by Carrina, to raise funds for the Dr Hadwen Trust and Wirral Animal Sanctuary.

The Trust works on cutting-edge biomedical research without using animals, while the Sanctuary – a year old this week – aims to be on hand to rescue all sorts of animals from harm.

The Charity Night took place last week in New Brighton. It was a huge success – almost £2,500 was raised and 60 people attended.

The funds raised will go towards developing the Trust’s research programme and, hopefully, erecting a new building for the Sanctuary.

So might I lend my congratulations to all of those who worked on the Charity Night, and encourage residents to visit the Sanctuary’s Shop in the precinct to see how they can help build on such terrific work?

My next surgery is at 5pm on Friday 25th November, at Birkenhead Town Hall.
