A success delivered by Devaney patients for local guide dogs

It was a privilege to meet with local residents and their guide dogs in the garden of Oxton’s Devaney Medical Centre last Saturday.

The event was hosted by the Devaney Patient Participation Group with support from the Practice’s Medical and Admin staff.

This was the first time a Medical Centre has laid on such an event. And what a success it was. £800 was raised and this may now become an annual event.

Guide dog merchandise was on sale and a brisk trade of homemade cakes went on throughout the event. A wonderful selection of raffle prizes was donated by local businesses approached by the Patients’ Group Chair. The Hoylake Hand and Voice choir joyfully provided a beautiful background noise.

Those of us who paid a visit had the opportunity to talk with guide dog owners and to find out more about the essential work done by the highly trained dogs, for whom there is no government funding.

Although it costs thousands of pounds to train and support a guide dog throughout its life, the organisation depends entirely on donations and the tireless work of volunteers.

So a huge well done and thank you to everybody who organised and supported last Saturday’s event. I hope it will be remembered as the first of many such events in years to come.

My next surgery will take place at 5pm on Friday 30th September at Birkenhead Town Hall. Should you wish to seek help in the meantime, might you please call me on 0800 028 0293?
