Hundreds more children to benefit from school breakfasts

Hundreds of children returning to school this week will find a treat has been added to the beginning of their school day.

The Feeding Birkenhead campaign, which I chair, is equipping our town’s primary schools with the supplies they need to set up or maintain free breakfast clubs for the new term.

Having received more than 4,000 boxes of cereal from the charity, His Church, at a special distribution event at Tranmere Rovers, Feeding Birkenhead is already delivering the supplies via the Neo Café to an initial group of seven schools.

The cereal would otherwise have been thrown to waste as it has become surplus in the manufacturing process, even though the food itself is still of good quality.

The Neo Café in Rock Ferry is storing and then delivering the cereal to Bidston Avenue Primary, Cathcart Street Primary, Well Lane Primary, Mersey Park Primary, Devonshire Park Primary, Kilgarth, and The Observatory, with more schools expected to sign up in the coming weeks.

We know that during term time in some schools, one in five children arrive hungry each morning.

This latest move by Feeding Birkenhead to establish school breakfast clubs therefore begins to hunger-proof the school day for hundreds more children.

I very much hope that families who are struggling on a low income will take up the offer of a free breakfast so that their children can be ready to learn at the start of each day.
