Two important transport victories

Two important victories were registered for Birkenhead residents last week.

First, Merseytravel has indicated that the longer term future of the Woodside Ferry Terminal is safe.

Since it was made aware of the strength of residents’ opposition to the closure of Woodside – following Councillor Jean Stapleton’s terrific campaign – Merseytravel’s response has been first class.

That it is fully committed to maintaining the Terminal in the longer term, and exploring the various options of doing so, is another hugely encouraging step.

The challenge now is to attract investment into the Terminal and its surrounding area, as well as to ensure it is given a prominent part to play in the regeneration of the Town Centre.

A second victory will feel particularly sweet for those people on our side of the river who work late shifts in Liverpool over the weekend. Until early last year, this group of workers could travel home in the early hours on the cross-river night bus.

Since it was done away with last year, I have been campaigning for a replacement service to be installed.
Following a short trial run last Christmas, Stagecoach has now confirmed it will be resurrecting the service from Friday 9th September.

My next surgery will also take place on Friday 9th September at 5pm in Birkenhead Town Hall. The next one after that will be three weeks later on Friday 30th September. Should you require any assistance in the meantime, might you please call my office on 0800 028 0293?
