A visit to Birkenhead Priory

29
Jun

Before Birkenhead, there was the Priory. The Priory is probably the oldest building in Merseyside and is remembered today as being given a Royal Charter to establish, in those famous words, a ferry across the Mersey.

The Parish Church of Birkenhead was St Mary’s, which was built within the Priory site. Its tower remains open to visitors, as does the rest of the site.

I have visited the site often, but last Friday was an official visit to meet the volunteers. It is this group of people that keep the Priory open, both for us golden oldies but, more importantly, for schools.

The chapel still functions and possesses a wonderful Ninian Comper window. Only beautiful people appear in Comper windows, and he was a couple of generations before modern advertising sold its products by emphasising human beauty.

The volunteers have a herb garden – just as the monks would have had. And part of what was once a ruined site has long been reroofed and revived as a formal education centre.

Opening times for the Priory throughout the summer are 1pm - 5pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 10am - 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
