A chance to vote about the future of our country

Jun

Come Thursday, we all have a chance to vote about the future of our country. I am voting on balance for our country to Leave the EU, but I totally respect people who will come to a different conclusion.

For me, the issue is one which boils down to control of our borders. That is not simply because we need to be able to regulate the numbers of people coming to this country to work, and will thereby naturally bring their families.

Any country needs to know how many people are likely to be members of its population at any one time, so they can budget properly for more schools, more roads, more sanitation facilities, and, above all, more homes.

We can’t fulfil that budgetary arrangement at the moment, because under the EU’s freedom of movement rules we do not know how many people will be members of our society from one month to the next. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, taxpayers are not keen to pay that much more to meet these new needs.

That means those at the bottom of the pile – the poor – pay the price of open borders, and it is this group above all others that through my political life I have been most concerned to defend and promote.

But on Friday we have to pick ourselves up. A government will have to be re-formed, whatever the result.

And we need a renegotiating team that will help bring the country together after this extraordinarily long and vacuous referendum campaign.
