Credit card sellers near Birkenhead market

January is always a tough month for families who are trying to foot the bills from Christmas. Some families over the past few weeks will have been up to their ears in paperwork from various credit cards.

The last thing they will have needed is to be pestered by companies trying to get them to sign up for yet more credit cards. Yet that is exactly what has been happening in and around Birkenhead’s main shopping precinct.

A number of companies have pitched up outside the market and along Grange Road to try to convince people to take on more debt.

Residents tell me that their sales techniques have escalated from a tactic of persistence to one of sheer aggression.

Elsewhere in the town centre, it seems as though some people have taken it upon themselves to pretend they are collecting for charity. These rogue collectors apparently put on a convincing act, but the money ends up lining their own pockets rather than going towards good causes.

I’ve written to the leader of the council asking whether he might audit all of those individuals and companies who have been authorised to sell their products, or collect money, in the town centre.

We will then be able to weed out those who use improper tactics, and others who are lying through their teeth.

Please get in touch if you have been made to feel threatened or placed under pressure by these individuals and companies, so that I can share this evidence with the council.

On a separate matter, I will not be running my surgery this Friday. The next one will be on Friday, February 26.

Please ring my office on 0800 028 0293 with any urgent inquiries.
