Save Woodside Ferries

6
Jan

Might I begin 2016 with a plea to Wirral residents wishing to play their part in saving the ferries service?

Since Merseytravel began consulting on plans to cease running ferries to and from Birkenhead, I have set up the Save Woodside Ferries Action Group with Councillors Jean Stapleton and Paul Doughty, and with Vicky Nowak.

We wrote to Merseytravel before Christmas asking them to throw out this unacceptable proposal.

But we have yet to receive a reply and the meeting to discuss the proposal looks set to go ahead this Thursday.

Our opposition is based both on the historic reason of the ferry being the first umbilical cord between Wirral and Liverpool, and because this proposal totally ignores the major regeneration initiatives about to get under way in Birkenhead town centre.

Our belief is that the ferries are an asset, not a liability, and Merseytravel should treat them as such.

The monies raised from Wirral residents via the unfair tunnel tolls are distributed right across Merseyside. The Action Group is calling for a fairer proportion of the funds to be spent where they have been raised – here in Wirral – by putting them towards the upkeep and maintenance of the ferries. We are calling also for Merseytravel to allow Wirral residents to set up a public trust that can guarantee the long-term future of the ferries.

Local residents can play their part in supporting the campaign by signing our petition to Merseytravel. The Action Group will be gathering signatures outside Woodside’s Home café this Saturday morning at 11am.

Alternatively, you can sign the online petition at: https://www.change.org/p/gary-evans-merseytravel-save-woodside-ferry
