I returned to the House of Commons this week to see the Modern Slavery Bill through its final stages

May I please thank local residents and, above all, the wonderful staff at Broadgreen Hospital for their terrific support over the past few days?

It was lovely to receive such a large number of messages from you, and I much enjoyed replying to many of them.

I returned to the House of Commons this week to see the Modern Slavery Bill through its final stages.

I am so pleased that having lobbied the Home Secretary just over a year ago to introduce this Bill, and worked hard since to make the Bill as effective as possible, it will become law before Parliament dissolves for the election.

Within the space of 18 months Britain has established itself again as a world leader in the fight against modern slavery.

I was very much hoping that another important matter here in Birkenhead might have been settled prior to the election, but the debate on the future of Rock Ferry High School has recently turned poisonous.

A small number of people are carrying out political thuggery in a way I haven’t witnessed since the Trotskyist Militant Tendency tried to infiltrate the Labour Party thirty years ago. Their behaviour at last week’s meeting was so outrageous that the Police had to be called in. It took Labour ten years to act, let’s hope the Greens act more quickly!

Might I therefore make a plea to the Green Party that it immediately expels these agitators who shout, scream and abuse their way through the debate on Rock Ferry High School?
