The work of Feeding Britain is about to begin here in Birkenhead

The work of Feeding Britain is about to begin here in Birkenhead.

I’ve called a meeting later this week with local churches and other religious organisations to gather their thoughts on how we set about achieving a hunger-free Wirral.

At our meeting I will be making three main proposals.

The first is that we regularly maintain pressure on our local Jobcentre Plus to speed up the time it takes to process new benefit claims. We must also press them to make sure they offer emergency payments to people whose claims have been delayed.

I will continue lobbying the Department for Work and Pensions to introduce a ‘yellow card’ warning for claimants before a sanction is applied.

The second proposal is to work with each of the supermarkets, and as importantly, their suppliers, operating in Wirral to make sure much more of the good food they produce that becomes surplus is delivered, with the help of FareShare and others, to our churches and other organisations who serve meals to people in dire need.

As our report found, these meals can begin a long process of getting some of our most vulnerable citizens back to where they need to be.

A further proposal is to make sure every child from a poor family takes up their entitlement to free school meals, and to try to extend this provision throughout the school holidays.

When the schools pack up this week for Christmas there will be lots of parents dreading the prospect of having to go two weeks without a hot lunch for their child.
