Well done the Post Office for putting the needs of the community first

Looking at the empty premises in Mount Road last week, you would never have been able to guess that Natwest had been operating here until just the day before. Local residents told me that it had all gone – lock, stock and barrel – in just a day, including the cash point. The nearest branch is now all the way over in the town centre.

I’d been informed a few weeks ago that Natwest was about to close its doors in Higher Tranmere, and so I contacted the Post Office to see how they might step in and offer banking services to local residents who would be left exposed by the bank’s closure.

When I met them in Birkenhead the other Friday, they told me that such a scheme is not only in the pipeline but is already available to some residents. If you have a Bank of Ireland or Clydesdale Bank account you can do all your banking at the Post Office. Others are catching up too, with HSBC, Lloyds, Santander and Co-Op offering most banking services through the Post Office.

If you previously used the Natwest in Higher Tranmere, you are now able to withdraw cash and check your balance at the Post Office. The nearest one to where the bank used to be is the Dacre Hill Post Office on Old
Chester Road, and there’s another one next to the Rock Ferry One Stop Shop.

They’re also developing a system that will soon mean you’re able to cash cheques and pay in cash deposits here.

Well done the Post Office for putting the needs of the community first.
