Street pastors are a blessing to Wirral revellers

You may have seen the wonderful TV programme on street pastors operating in Liverpool. They also operate in Wirral.

Recently I met Mark Latham, who is the new co-ordinator of StreetLight on our side of the river. He is immensely enthusiastic and is anxious to extend their work.

They meet at around 10.30pm on Friday night and head out by 11.15pm. The night lasts until 4am, sometimes 6.30am.

So what do the street pastors do? They are there to minimise trouble. They hand out bottles of water and, to women who’ve taken off their shoes, pairs of flip-flops so that they don’t cut up their feet.

For those who have had too much to drink, the pastors try and persuade them not to drive home by offering to look after their car keys. Others are helped into taxis.

On other occasions, street pastors phone home and get members of a family to come and collect people who have drunk too much or are suffering from being too high on drugs.

You may have spotted the street pastors moving around Birkenhead on a Friday night. They have a very distinctive uniform.

Here is another area where the Church has pioneered a service. But Mark makes plain that whilst many of their street pastors are drawn from local churches, people of no religious commitment are joining and are most welcome.

If you would like to find out more about helping, please contact Mark on 07504 278287 .
