Despite the funding constraints forced upon Wirral Council in this week’s Budget, the campaign to keep our Williamson alive and thriving is gathering momentum.
The overarching aim of the campaign is to draw upon the various talents, passions and expertise of local residents to make the most of one of our local community’s finest assets.
Our latest meeting gave birth to a new community-based trust with the aim of running of the Williamson with the full support of Wirral Council.
It was abundantly clear to all present that the Williamson is ready for an exciting future. But we agreed that this could only be achieved by pursuing a different approach to running the show.
An Executive was established to begin drawing up a business plan that covers issues such as costs and income, programme activities and exhibitions. But each decision must always be made with the interests of the Williamson at heart.
Our mission is to ensure that, in the face of deep financial adversity, the Williamson is able to perform its rightful role as a leading light of the Merseyside arts and heritage scene.
This must be done by first making sure local residents know they a genuinely world class collection on their own doorstep.
We must then look at ways of attracting visitors from across the region, and indeed from further afield.
Now we must look at the nuts and bolts of the operation.
The Executive will report back in January with some concrete proposals. We will then move to calling a public meeting so that everyone with an interest can have a say in our gallery’s future.
