Birkenhead is regaining its beauty

Birkenhead has lost too many of its beautiful buildings.

Over the years I've been asked to open new developments. There has been one conversion which I thought an improvement on what was there before. Methodist Housing built one of the four developments to which I would give a star rating.

Riverside gave Birkenhead its second star development. The new village on what was Five Ways is the third.

On Friday, I opened the fourth development to which I would give star rating. Many of you will remember the wonderful work the sisters at St Margaret’s provided to Birkenhead from their site, but they have had to move on.

Local councillors were more than anxious that the best of the site would be preserved and that new homes would also be provided.

Their lobbying came to fruition on Friday. I was asked to open the site, which gives a little glimpse of Paradise.

The main house has been converted into a number of spectacular homes. All the other buildings, except the chapel, had been pulled down and the bricks reused to build a quad of stunning houses and apartments. The chapel, too, has become a wonderful home.

These homes would cost 10 times the price in London; one advantage to the gap between North and South.

So let me wish the new tenants well. And also, for those of us who would like to see Birkenhead regaining more of its glory, let’s hope the wonder of this site is quickly reflected elsewhere.
