Bedroom Tax 3

17
Apr
I have written before on the bedroom tax, but the more I think about it the more angry I am. Over a thousand constituents will this month find that their rent is not covered in full.

I object to the bedroom tax on a number of grounds.  Many tenants would be happy to have smaller accommodation if it was available.

It is the extreme worry that many of my constituents face that so appals me.  I think of my mum.  She would be worried out of her mind if she was in this position.

She would try and hide her worry of course but it would grind away inside.  Some of the letters I've received portray vulnerable constituents feeling just like this.

The government is running a campaign against constituents who live in social housing as though they are second-class citizens who should be treated differently from the rest of us.

That's not part of my idea of the Big Society that David Cameron keeps going on about.  My Big Society is one that obviously has differences, but makes a real effort at awarding equal respect.

There's not much of that respect in the way some ministers have been campaigning on this issue.

There's only a limited amount of opposition MPs and Labour councils can make.  That's why it's so important to win general elections and why I was always keen to get rid of Gordon Brown so that we could have won last time.
