Quashing the original Hillsborough verdicts

When I met some of the Birkenhead families who lost loved ones at Hillsborough they all requested that the government should move swiftly to set aside the grotesque inquest verdicts following the Hillsborough disaster. The government’s senior legal officer, the Attorney General, promised to go back to the High Court as soon as he could to ask for the verdicts to be set aside.

He has acted as good as his word. He has made an application to go before the High Court for the original verdicts to be made null and void.

Time is of the essence. This injustice has already lasted too long. But for one of the Hillsborough mothers, Anne Williams, time is even more important. She's mortally ill.

While she can hardly believe the news that a long campaign to clear her son's name is about to come to fruition it is only human to want more progress to be made before she dies.

That is why I have written to the Attorney General to ask him to make a direct appeal to the Lord Chief Justice – who governs the timetable of the High Court – requesting a hearing before Christmas.

It won’t be easy. There is not much time before Christmas. But for all the Hillsborough families, including those in Birkenhead, and particularly Anne Williams, every day now becomes more important.

My Christmas wish is that good news comes from the High Court.
