Might I please thank Birkenhead residents for sponsoring a group of local volunteers who completed the Wirral Coastal Walk for Feeding Birkenhead? Our volunteers raised over £1,500 on the Walk. Every penny of this sum will be going towards healthy school breakfasts – porridge, fruit drinks, fruit snacks, and cereal – for hundreds of children across the town, to ensure they are ready to learn at the beginning of each school day. Thanks to Birkenhead residents’...
I nominated Jeremy Corbyn to ensure he could compete for the Labour leadership in 2015. I did not expect him to win. Nor did members of his campaign group. But I did wish for his tradition in the Labour Party to be part of the leadership debate. Like Jeremy and his campaign group, I did not foresee the impact of Ed Miliband’s introduction of a £3 membership offer with full voting rights. Jeremy was elected leader – not only once, but twice – in opposition to the vast...
The political parties now have only a few days left to write their General Election manifesto. I submitted a manifesto proposal this week for a national programme of free meals and fun during school holidays to improve children’s life chances. Feeding Birkenhead has over the past two years provided such a service for over 2,000 children across the town. Trips were made by councillors and officials to youth zones in Bolton, Oldham and Wigan. We were all massively impressed seeing the clubs heaving with activities all being undertaken by an army of young people. The Hive will offer a similar range of activities. There...
Might I please thank local residents for the generosity and support they have shown yet again for Feeding Birkenhead? Following our recent appeal, residents have donated £200 towards Feeding Birkenhead’s school breakfast programme. This will enable ten of our schools – each pallet costs £20 – to offer porridge, muesli, tea, fruit drinks and fruit snacks each morning for those children who might otherwise start lessons on an empty stomach. All of the food, which...
